"Local bands everywhere struggle to lose that raw, young sound of innocence and intermediate equipment. Somehow, Love-cars matured early, advancing to a level usually governed by time and exposure (i.e. R.E.M.). I'M FRIENDS WITH ALL STARS displays the Minneapolis band's already-developed sound -- seasoned, established and incredible. The opening and closing tracks are gentle, lulling songs that frame the album into a tight box of swift-slow contrasts. Their style has a sleepy dreaminess (blame it on singer James Diers' voice) without being boring; it's heartachy, but not whiny. Grabbing lines dot the songs to trip you up -- those lines that you scribble on the inside cover of your notebooks or on a scrap of paper carried in your wallet. Love-cars give it their all in this explosive album, with tight tiers of volatile syncopation and dueling crescendos/decrescendos (much credit given to drum guru David King). We may have to share our treasure with the rest of the world. Love-cars should not be hidden." (Minnesota Daily, February 2000) |
